Harry Connick, Jr. : A Holiday Celebration
Tue, 12/04/08
07:30 PM
NJPAC (Prudential Hall)
Newark, NJ
Over the past two decades, Harry Connick, Jr. has proven to be among the world’s most successful and multi-talented artists. Connick first reached a mass audience as a pianist, singer and bandleader, securing his place in the public eye as a renaissance man and versatile entertainer. His love of music and performing dates back to his childhood in New Orleans, where he studied piano with such luminaries as James Booker and Ellis Marsalis. He first performed publicly at age five, appeared on his first jazz recording at age ten, and released his self-titled major label debut for Columbia Records at 19, only a year after his high school graduation and his move to New York City.
Connick achieved widespread success as a musician when director Rob Reiner asked him to contribute the score to his 1989 smash When Harry Met Sally, leading to Connick’s first multi-platinum album.
This holiday concert will include selections from Connick’s upcoming CD, What a Night! A Christmas Album, which features classics like “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Winter Wonderland” as well as several new tracks written by Connick.

Poncho Sanchez is always an interesting artist who on his recent releases mixes his Latin beats with good old rhythm and blues, which never fails to satisfy the listener with a unique and delicious mix of these ingredient/genres. The two time Grammy nominee and once Grammy award winner has obviously been affected by the music he grew up with in the sixties and seventies, and `Raise your Hand’ is just another fine example of his fondness for the sounds of classic soul that he beautifully creates his own unique mix of funky Latin jazz and soul.

The RMS St Helena is unique.
She is the only ocean-going vessel in the world still to carry the venerable title of Royal Mail Ship, held in the past by so many famous British passenger liners, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary amongst them.
In addition to carrying passengers in well-fed comfort, she is almost the sole source of supply of all goods for her island namesake. From wind turbines to automotive parts; sheep, goats, and Christmas turkeys to furniture, food and paint, everything has to be carried by ship to the island. This is part of the fascination. RMS ST Helena is not just a passenger vessel; it’s a working ship, plying the Atlantic Ocean, carrying goods and people nearly halfway around the world. When you sail on the RMS, you are following in the wake of the generations of travellers and explorers who crossed the world’s oceans in the leisured days before air travel. A voyage on the RMS is an unforgettable experience: a blue water voyage on a working ship to lonely and remote tropical islands.
There is plenty of opportunity to experience the various protected wildlife parks and nature reserves in South Africa. Why not take a trip to the beautiful wine regions of the Western Cape or visit echo-friendly Table Mountain or simply sit on the dock edge and watch the always amusing seals basking in the sunshine. If you’re lucky enough, you may even get see a ‘Wandering Albatross’ off Cape Point. The quality of wildlife here is on a scale that is almost unimaginable!
The Voyager also tours Namibia, amazingly resilient desert creatures roam in one of the most fragile but unforgiving landscapes in the world, St. Helena, tiny Tropical Island of St. Helena is the historian and nature enthusiasts’ answer to paradise. The seas surrounding the island where Napoleon Bonaparte spent the final six years of his life in exile are teeming with fascinating marine life. Weird and wonderful creatures can be seen here. And then theres Ascension Island, This has got to be one of the weirdest landscapes you’ll ever see in your lifetime. The moon-like landscape is home to hundreds of thousands of ‘Wide-awake Turns’ and other interesting bird species (RSPB Protected) and has to be the avid bird watchers paradise. Even at the top of lush ‘Green Mountain’ you’ll be fascinated to find the ‘Land Crab’.
BRICKVINE FAVORITE: LISA HILTON

Lisa Hilton is an unpretentious, understated pianist with a flare for groove and feel. She is a prolific composer whose original compositions create moods and atmospheres that take the listener on a journey. Along for the ride on Sunny Day Theory, her latest release, are drummer Lewis Nash, saxophonist Brice Winston, and Bassist Larry Grenadier. These men lend their considerable musical talents to a song cycle that is as much about following Hilton through a soundscape of moods as it is about the individual character of each tune. Hilton doesn t fill each track with endless improvisations. Rather, the sets the mood and character of each piece and then gently walks through that world for a few minutes. There is something quite refreshing about this approach to a modern jazz recordings.
